Eyeglasses Bring Sight to the Poor in Peru
Through Medical Ministry International (MMI) eyeglasses are prescribed and fitted for the underprivileged in Peru. Founded in 1968, MMI is the world's largest short-term, volunteer, Christian medical mission group providing numerous opportunities for service around the globe each year. MMI has need of 1.2 million pairs of eyeglasses each year.
The trips to are usually 1 to 2 weeks with the goal of reaching the poor who have little or no access to medical care.
In addition to eyeglasses, services include cataract surgeries, cross-eye repairs, and treatment for eye infections.
For trips to Peru, the eyeglasses are cleaned, prescriptions measured, and catalogued by computer. They are shipped for distribution. |
Over 3,200 patients were seen in one week during a recent trip.
The team included 4 opthamologists, 2 optometrists, 2 medical students, 3 nurses, 6 technicians, and about 20 general helpers. |

Patients come from hours away and wait many hours to be seen.
Bibles in Spanish are distributed and many want to be baptised.
While they are very poor, they are grateful. Many are able to see clearly for the first time in many years or perhaps in their life.

Money donated by Lord of Life helps to sponsor the costs of the trips. Used eyeglasses, sunglasses, cases, and frames are needed to fulfill our mission. Donations are accepted in the Narthex.
